Posted on Tuesday, October 15 @ 00:00:00 PDT by Carl Brooks
In our hurried hectic world, people are looking for things that are fast--like fast food, fast cash from the ATM, even fast credit. The PalmOS Minute is intended for those in a hurry. Used as a supplement to its full online Palm resource site, Palmloyal.com, it is designed as an attention-getting thought-starter that will encourage individuals to apply PalmOS principles and practices to their daily lives. In this series, we examine ways to handle, prepare for, and recover from system resets. What does your disaster recovery plan (DRP) look like?

Carl Brooks: This is Carl Brooks with the PalmOS Minute. How many
businesses do you think have disaster recovery plans? I would wager that many do
not have any, some have talked about it and the few that do have them - have
never tested it. If disaster strikes in a business, the person responsible for
(or perceived to be responsible for) the DRP will most likely be fired if there
is no DRP or if recovery is not successful. You should have a disaster
recovery plan (DRP) for your Palm handheld and you should test it out before
needing it. You are the one responsible to develop and test it. Even if your
company provides the handheld for your use - you can't rely on them to
provide your DRP.
What should a DRP consist of? At a minimum, it should include these:
Identify what information is the most important information that is loaded
- make sure it is recoverable first.
You should have a list of every 3rd party applications that you have
loaded.
You should have a list of all registration codes, Download URLs and your
Hotsync name used to register them. Most developers have procedures in place
to provide you with registration codes if you lost them.
You should use your Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook application to
export or backup your Calendar, address, to-do and memo data.
Have apps and data stored on a floppy, zip drive or CD-R or CD-RW
Have printed hardcopies of registration codes, phone numbers, or any data
you can't afford to be without.
A good DRP would ensure that 100% of your data is restored. A good DRP would
ensure that minimum downtime (the amount of time without your data) occurs. A
good DRP is only achieved by testing it out before a disaster occurs. Think
about what is the absolute worst scenario that can occur. What if your PC (or
Mac) is down too? What if the Internet was not accessible? What if you are
traveling when disaster occurs? Does your DRP take this in consideration? Can
you take a removable media to work or a friend's house and make a full recovery?
