Windows XP Compatibility
Palm’s testing shows Palm Desktop 4.0.1 to be compatible with pre-released
versions of Windows XP Home edition. Users can easily install the latest release
of Palm Desktop for Windows and synchronize their Palm-branded handheld to the
Palm Desktop or to Microsoft Outlook running on Windows XP Home Edition.
m500 Users
Customers of the recently release m500 series handhelds can use native USB for
even faster exchange of data and loading of new software to their handhelds.
Also supported is loading applications and data directly to a 8MB-128MB
expansion cards (SD Card or MultiMedia Card).
Palm III, Palm V, Palm VII, and m100 Users
Palm recommends using Palm Desktop 4.0.1 for Windows. If you do not have
version 4.0.1 you can download it from www.palm.com/support/downloads.
PalmConnect USB Kit Users
The PalmConnect USB Kit and the previously released Windows 2000 USB drivers
allow for fast synchronization to Windows XP Home Edition. You may need to
reinstall the Palm USB drivers after upgrading to Windows XP.
Synchronizing with Microsoft Outlook
If you have PocketMirror from Chapura (included with certain Palm handhelds),
you can choose to install conduits that synchronize MS Outlook with the
handheld applications Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, and Memo Pad. You
can choose to synchronize these applications with either Palm Desktop or
Microsoft Outlook, but not both.
m500 series users can install Palm Desktop 4.0.1 and the Chapura
PocketMirror conduits from the CD that came with your handheld. Microsoft
Outlook should be installed prior to installing Palm Desktop software. Other
Palm branded handheld users will want to download and install Palm Desktop
4.0.1 from the web and then run the PocketMirror setup.exe from the CD that
came with your Palm handheld. Visit www.PocketMirror.com for more information
about Chapura(R) PocketMirror.
Note About Windows XP Multi-user Support
Windows XP allows multiple users to use the same computer, each with their own
settings. Multiple user can use XP Home Edition and the Palm Desktop software
when each user logs on individually and logs off when done. Palm also recommends
that you install the Palm Desktop software to a different location for each user
(e.g. c:/palm/user1, c:/palm/user2, etc.). This is especially useful when users
synchronize to different desktop applications. For example, one user can
synchronize to the simple-to-use Palm Desktop, while a business user can choose
to synchronize to Microsoft Outlook.
Windows XP Home Edition now includes a “Switch User” feature where multiple
users can log on to their XP Home Edition PC at the same time. This situation is
not supported. Instead of switching users, one user must log out and the next
user log in to use Palm Desktop software.
Note for Windows XP Professional Users
The current Palm Desktop software version 4.0.1 is compatible with Windows XP
Professional. To properly install Palm Desktop and HotSync software admin rights
are required.
For the enterprise customer using Windows XP Professional, Palm is working on
a new Palm Desktop software installer designed to better support such enterprise
features as silent install, management of admin rights during installation,
improved security, and other features. Look for this new installer in early
2002.
